Flag Dedication
Donating a Burial Flag
Each year, the Avenue of Flags proudly accepts burial flags from families wishing to honor a loved one’s military service. These flags become part of one of the largest Memorial Day tributes in the country—a breathtaking display of patriotism and remembrance.
Due to limited storage and display capacity, we are currently able to dedicate up to 20 new flags each year. To honor not only your veteran’s memory but also the many others in this tradition, we warmly encourage families to consider volunteering - see our Volunteer Page for more information.
How to Donate Families and friends can initiate a flag donation by submitting a request form on our website or contacting the Avenue of Flags Secretary. Flags may be hand-delivered or mailed to:
Melissa Girard
C/O Farmers Bank
125 W 4th St
Spencer, IA 51301
Suggested Donation To help offset the costs of materials, storage, and long-term maintenance, we kindly suggest a $50 donation per flag. This contribution is not required but greatly appreciated - it ensures this powerful tribute can continue for future generations.
Flag Eligibility Burial flags may be donated in honor of any U.S. veteran, regardless of their hometown or burial location. Flags must be 5 feet by 8 feet, 100% cotton, and in good condition. If needed, a new flag can be purchased through the Avenue of Flags committee. Families retain ownership of their donated flag and may request its return at any time.
What Happens Next Each flag is respectfully cataloged and cared for:
Assigned a unique ID number
Entered into a digital database with the veteran’s name, branch, and service details
Labeled with a flagpole tag displaying the veteran’s name, birth and death dates, and military service
A confirmation receipt is mailed to the next of kin
Memorial Day Dedication Newly donated flags are honored at a special dedication ceremony each Memorial Day. Families are invited to take part by carrying or accompanying their veteran’s flag as it joins the display.
